You’re a respectful and professional person, who demonstrates exceptional moral values in everything you do. You’re passionate about providing health services, and about working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support delivery of the highest standard of care to patients.

  • A typical day for Katie, a Registered Nurse

A typical day for me would be preparing a group of members for deployment and field training; there’s always a lot of energy before a big deployment. We’re involved in lots of different general health management, including occupational assessment, pathology, clinical assessments, vaccinations, and sexual health. Given the work the members do, we get pretty good at treating wounds. Prevention plays a huge role in making sure that members stay fit and healthy and something we are all really committed to. I’m treating a couple of complex cases at the moment and seeing some great progress. I enjoy hanging out with my team members and having a chat in my breaks.

Medical roles

  • Medical roles available

    We have roles available for

    • Medical Officer – General Practice
    • Medical Officer – Defence Force Recruitment
    • Medical Officer – Under Water Medicine
    • Medical Officer – Aviation

  • What's it like?

Depending on your role, you’ll undertake nursing care to patients based on your specialisation and qualifications. You may assist in emergency medical responses, treating mental health presentations, tele-health, occupational assessments, sexual health, health prevention, administration of medications/vaccinations, and referral to other healthcare professionals.

  • What makes these roles special?

You get to work in a clinic and a ward that’s very different to those of a civilian GP. There’s a strong commitment to patient outcomes: this means you can spend as long as you need with patients to ensure they’re treated properly. It’s also easier to make referrals, significantly less administration is involved, and there’s no Medicare billing. There is strong follow-through in patient care processes; for example, tests are checked for completion, ensuring patients get the care they need.

  • About you

You’re an experienced medical professional with solid foundations as a General Practitioner. Your passion for providing the highest quality medical services is at the heart of everything you do. You have a friendly and professional manner, which puts patients at ease, and you take pride in your ability to inspire trust in both your patients and colleagues. You’re a respectful and professional person, who demonstrates exceptional moral values in everything you do. You’re passionate about providing clinical services, and about working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support delivery of the highest standard of care to patients.

  • A typical day for Sam, a General Practitioner

My morning starts with checking emails and actioning anything that is urgent. I’ll then start the sick parade, which is Defence’s term for normal GP presentations. I’ll then see patients booked in for short and semi-acute issues. The afternoon consists of MEC reviews, PHEs, THEs, late sick parade, and urgent recalls. About half my day is spent doing administration and other clinical work. I’ll also do ward rounds to review patients.

    • Senior Physiotherapist

  • What's it like?

As a senior member of the management team within a Defence Health Centre, you’ll be responsible for the provision of medical advice and the technical supervision of healthcare practitioners in your team. The Senior Clinician exercises independent and professional judgement, and clinical leadership, in carrying out the clinical and administrative responsibilities within the Health Centres.

  • What makes these roles special?

Knowing that you’re directly contributing to the health and wellbeing of our active serving Defence members is a source of tremendous pride. Our leaders feel privileged to be able to apply their broad skillset to help defence personnel regain their physical wellbeing, support their recovery, and contribute to their overall health and quality of life, keeping them at their best for the important work they do. Ensuring that Defence Personnel are prepared and ready for short notice deployments is a priority for ADF Health Centres, and you can feel proud of the high-quality healthcare that you provide. You also have the opportunity (should you wish) to travel and work across different Defence Bases across Australia!

  • About you

You’re a respected senior leader in healthcare, who’s comfortable communicating across various stakeholders to create a collegiate work environment. Clear and effective communication is one of your strengths, as is your ability to interact with different levels of management. You’re dependable and approachable, which inspires trust from your colleagues and helps put patients at ease. Your strong work ethic provides a leading example for others under your management, and you’re reliable and consistent with your actions and clinical decisions to support the delivery of the highest standard of care to Defence members.

A typical day for Hannah, a Senior Contracted Clinician

No two days are the same! The clinical care duties are akin to typical general practice. However, as the patient demographic is predominantly young and healthy ADF members, the most common presentations are musculoskeletal injuries, infectious diseases and mental health.

As the point of contact much of the day is spent interacting with others, providing guidance and answering queries from Medical Officers, uniformed and ununiformed staff. Clinical governance involves providing oversight of Medical Officer work, identifying clinical improvement opportunities as well as responding to complaints or incidents. The work is an absolute privilege.
