FAQs

Application and Training

  • How long will the process take from application to first day?

Due to the nature of the roles, working on a Defence Base requires some additional checks and balances. This includes getting your Baseline Security Clearance and completing some pre-commencement training. It will take on average between 90-120 days between being hired and starting work. Some Baseline Security Clearances can take longer, so these timeframes are only indicative.

  • Do I need specific Defence experience?

No. You’re required to hold the requisite experience for the tasks in your role, but you’re not required to hold experience in working in Defence Health.

  • Will I need to undergo a physical examination ?

No. There are no physical examinations as part of the recruitment process.

  • Will I need to do any extra training?

Yes. Our operations involve some processes specific to working with Defence, which we provide training for. We also upskill you in the use of our state-of-the-art online administrative systems, which will allow you to be efficient and productive every day.

  • Do I have to meet fitness standards to work in this role?

We don’t impose formal fitness testing, like that required of Defence personnel. However, like any employer, we do expect that you maintain your fitness at a standard appropriate for safely performing all the tasks involved in your specific role.

Patients

  • What types of patients do you see?

Clients are military personnel (Army, Navy, and Air Force) both full time and reservists.

  • How sick or unwell are the patients?

This varies. However, serving members generally present with a high level of physical fitness. Our services involve a lot of preventative care, including family planning, mental health, and sexual health, as well as treatment for minor illnesses and injuries.

  • Are there quotas to meet for how many patients you see in a day?

No. The bases have a sick parade each morning that allows acute patients to attend for immediate assessment and review, which is variable in the number of people that are seen. But the rest of the day mostly involves scheduled treatments, and the number of patients is relatively stable, so you’re not likely to experience unexpected influxes of patients.

Workday

  • Do I have to wear a Defence uniform?

No, the roles don’t involve joining the Defence Force. You’ll be employed by ADF Health Services, and you’ll wear a Serco uniform.

  • Will I need to serve as a Defence Force member?

No. They are all civilian roles.

  • How easy is it to travel into work?

All centres are located on the base. Travelling to the centre each day will depend on where your home is located. You will not be required to live on base. We offer locum roles for those who like to travel and explore Australia.

  • Will I be working in shifts?

It depends. Some roles have fixed rosters, and some are shifts. This will depend on the role and will be made clear in the job advertisement.

Colleagues

  • How do the different organisations work together?

Serco, Bupa, Defence, and the Australian Public Service all work collaboratively to deliver quality health services. Serco recruits and manages most of the clinical and non-clinical roles, while Bupa manages the senior roles and is responsible for clinical leadership. Each centre has a Health Centre Manager (which is a uniformed role), who is responsible for the overall running of that centre.

  • How do the teams work together?

Our teams in each centre are relatively small, and comprise medical, nursing, dental, and allied health staff who work collaboratively and in direct contact with each other. Departments are closely linked, supporting communication and the delivery of excellent patient outcomes.

  • How will I be supported?

You’ll receive lots of support from Serco, Bupa and ADF. You’ll be supported by a team leader from Serco who will provide day-to-day support for leave, answering questions, professional development etc. Bupa will provide you with clinical support and leadership through their team of Senior Clinicians. Serco’s clinical governance and learning and development teams are located centrally and are there to support you in delivering the highest standards of patient care.

  • What is the Defence Base culture like?

Our team members consistently say the culture is one of the best parts of their jobs. It’s a unique environment, and everyone shares the same commitment and passion for serving their country.
